How to apply for a MS Society Research Grant

The MS Society supports research in the field of MS in order to improve understanding of the causes and development of the disease, to further develop treatment options, and to improve quality of life for people with MS and their families.

For the 60-year-anniversary the MS Society will support research projects for 1.5 Mio CHF. Additionally the support of the Swiss MS Registry is being continued. We support research to end MS and to improve the quality of life of those living with MS. We finance research for people with MS.

For the 2019/2020 funding period, the evaluation and funding procedures will be led by an independent committee presided by Prof. Dr. med. Jürg Kesselring, former head of Rehazentrum Valens and honorary president of the Swiss MS Society.

People with MS are involved in MS Society research support (as well as all other governing bodies). Together with experts they evaluate research proposals. They are living with MS and are experts in living with this disease. Research projects supported by the MS Society are highly relevant and provide tangible benefits for those living with MS.

Based on a survey among people afflicted by MS, the Board of the MS Society has outlined its main research priorities for the 2019/2020 two-year-funding period:

  • Understanding MS
Causes of MS, Genetics in MS, Environmental Factors, Disease Progression

  • Living with MS
Symptom Management, Quality of Life, Complementary Treatment Options

The essential purpose of a project grant is to provide support for a time-limited research project designed to answer genuinely novel research question.

Above all, research proposals need to demonstrate tangible potential benefits for those living with MS.

Supported researchers are expected to interact with people with MS and the MS Society on a regular basis and actively support communications and fundraising efforts. In turn, researcher will not only receive generous financial support but also access to the MS Society’s extensive networking and communication channels.
